In Southern California, many are familiar with the term “June Gloom.” This phrase speaks to the changing weather patterns that is experienced during the early summer months, where fog filters in which brings with it cloudy days with limited sprinkle of rain. It is well documented, that weather plays a big role in levels of mood in humans. For example, many individuals are usually seeking out sunny days as it is nature’s way of increasing mood and a boost of energy. Most local Californians are accustomed to that bright sunny day through out the year, therefore this shift in weather can lead to symptoms assoicated with stress, feeling more tired or fatigue, having lower levels of energy, limiting motivation, and trouble with focus and concentrating.

In the clinical world, we have a term for this its called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  This condition is related to changes in the seasons which can lead to depressive symptoms. As we know, the different seasons bring different weather patterns depending on where we are in the world. Symptoms to take note include the following:

  • Having trouble with concentration and focusing
  • Changes in sleep behaviors, which can lead to sleeping more or less

  • Experiencing some anxiety feelings and thoughts
  • Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness
  • Thoughts of no longer wanting to be here living
